    How does one protect the bottom of wooden posts from damage due to string weed wackers?

      I just wrap and nail aluminum sheet stock around the bottom that is 4" in width - no rust, stays in place.

      You might try some rolled flashing material ( metal ) and wrap them and nail the flashing to the bottom of the post. I have seen people do this for the bottom of small trees too. Don't like the metal shine. Spray paint it after installation.

      1. spray a grass killer so the grass doesn't grow near the fence post. 2. If you want the grass, cut a PVC pipe (one that the post will fit inside) 6-9" in height (depending on the height of your bottom board or wire), then cut the PVC pipe in halve from top to bottom (2 cuts splitting the pipe in halves). Using self adhesive Velcro or even hinges and a clip you can make a protective sleeve to go around your fence post as you weed. There is also a bar you can purchase that attaches to the weed whacker that will keep the string away from the post. These are hard to find, can be bent so the distance is shortened but may work if you have a small area.

        agree with suggestion to kill grass in appropriate diameter around post, or dig it up and replace with metal such as aluminum sheeting. Place some pebbles or mulch over it for looks. As an alternative to PVC, use the black corregated drainage pipe which is frequently used to protect trees from similar damage. Not difficult to cut with razor knife or sheet metal scissors.

    I wonder if you are using Easy to use spindle for your toilet paper holders, available at Amazon.com or Easychanger.us. It may be a nice cheap surprising factor for the homeowners. Just a suggestion. Your website and designs are beautiful. Danielle

      Not sure of the entire story here but I will ask anyway. I have Toilet paper holders one is ceramic glued to the wall the other is a fancy one that one end of the horizontal rod raises to install a new roll of TP. THE ISSUE is if the cardboard inside the TP roll is not perfectly round it vibrated the wall making noise that can be heard through wall resonance. ANY IDEAS on a quiet rolling TP holder? ~~ my 3rd bathroom we have a standalone holder ,,but that not practical in the other two rooms

    when you walk into my house, there is a fireplace made out of brick (tan color 12"x3.5" approx) from floor to ceiling and it just looks ugly. It shows the black char where heat comes out. The entrance of the fireplace is shaped like a dome. It needs something cheery. I am thinking a mantel. I always wanted a mantel and saw one at my nephews house and just fell in love with it. The remodeliers did a good job upgrading the home. Perhaps I should be talking with a craftsman. What do you think?

      Shirley, why not check out some architectural salvage places, or antiques shops or used furniture stores to see if they have a mantel that has been removed from a home that is still usable. you can sand it down, clean it up, even paint it if you don't like the natural finish, and set it in front of your tan brick wall to highlight your fireplace.     I brought my home (HUD) needed alot of internal and external repairs. Is there (federal) programs that I can get into , insulation and lead paint free windows. I just realize that the siding outside in abestos. Thank you.

      Anonymous Curious, did HUD give you any escrow monies to work on fixing these items? We received $1500 to spend though we only were given 30 days to complete the items the money was earmarked for, which were plumbing issues and repainting the outside of our new old home. As far as federal programs check online for your state, you might also check for local programs, and with your utility companies, they offer many programs either federal or locally funded. Good Luck!!!

      I'm sorry about the asbestos, my mom's house had yellow clay--ish tiles that are now cracked and chipped, they are asbestos and we have no idea what to do with them either.

    Does anyone know how to remove the Mop and Glow type floor "waxes"? We've got quite a buildup and our dog's nails are leaving scratch marks that go halfway thru the coating and it looks terrible. The containers for this material do not have any directions for removal. Any ideas?

      On the back of the container should be a manufacturer direct phone number. They should be able to tell you what will remove your build up ? So your dogs nails won't dig in so much maybe trim and file dogs nails. When you talk to the manufacturer you can ask for the MSDS sheet or go online and pull it up it will tell you what chemical makeup that product is made of and if they have a mfg, Rep avaliable that person should be able to tell you what to use to strip off build up and maybe re apply a fresh coat , I'm sure there will be a product avl. at home center, maybe try tri-sodium phosphate you can find it at any paint store or home center, Do a test spot on floor 1st, may be but I would check as I stated above with mfg. 1st. I hope this helps your situation. Doug

      Try ammonia. It works for removing many types of chemical/wax build up and may very well work for this, Please don't pay attention to the ugly comments. Whatever you do, DON'T use bleach as this will cause a yellowing effect. Good Luck!

      My daughter could have written this question. She ended up with a finish stripper and a plastic scraper followed with 220 sand paper. Not an easy job. Try an area tile or flooring dealer for the mane of a contractor who does floors. (think about no dogs or carpet)

    I have a granite vanity top in 1 bathroom that has gotten water spots on it and I have tried everything I know of to get rid of them. It is only 2 yrs. old & I really am unhappy with it. When we bought it no sales person said anything at all about sealing it which seems like the thing to do if we ever get rid of the spots. Any suggestions will be tried for sure. Thanks!

    Does anyone have any suggestions on a longer lasting painting system for the metal side of a pontoon boat? I've used rustoleum but it seems I'm re-painting every other year
